about

This circa 1970s album was made by Erskine and his brother Manny Morris during one of Erskine's visits home to Douglastown. Home recordings of Erskine's music like this one were on regular rotation for Manny and his wife Phyllis, whether on the kitchen stereo while the couple were waiting for their morning coffee to brew or on the road in their car. We thank Phyllis for loaning us this tape several years back. Thanks to Paul Fackler for help with some of the tune titles and commercial sources.

You'll hear a mixture of rare local tunes Erskine learned from older fiddlers (and lilters) in Douglastown, Gaspé during his youth in the 1920s and 30s; as well as his interpretations of almost forgotten tunes Isidore Soucy's early commercial recordings. There are three different yet captivating settings of the fiddle standard "The Devils' Dream" played throughout the tape.

We are not aware of who is providing the guitar accompaniment on some of these performances.

Sounds from the Coast: The Erskine Morris Home Recordings Archive Montreal, Québec

Erskine Morris (1913-1997) was a fiddler from Douglastown in Quebec's Gaspé region. At 10, he began playing fiddle, learning from his mother's (Beatrice Fortin) lilting. He learned an extensive local repertoire from two brothers and elderly neighbours, Joe and Charlie Drody. Following the Second World War, he relocated to the Montreal area. In the late 1970s, he retired to Cambridge, Ontario. ... more
